Before working at a Sport Clips store in Twin Falls, Idaho, Rachel Sorenson, Store Manager of the American Fork, Utah Sport Clips, didn’t know much about football. Today, she is an expert and knows more about football than most guys.
“Since my husband is a football fanatic, we watch a lot of football,” she said. “Then, while I’m working, we watch a lot of football with our clients at the store.” When asked if BYU could keep winning after 5 straight wins, she said, “that’s a great question, but I’m not going to make any predictions even though it is interesting watching them move into the top-10.” With a sports theme throughout, Rachel’s store is inundated with all kinds of sports. Multiple monitors display sporting events from around the world in addition to American football, baseball, and basketball. As manager of the store, Rachel does a lot more than just enjoy the sports, however. Along with the other stylists, she spends much of her day cutting men’s and boys’ hair. “I really enjoy cutting men’s hair,” said Sorenson. “Men pretty much know what they want, and we work with them to make them look good with the style they want.” Sorenson’s responsibilities include hiring new stylists and helping them with additional training to further their careers and ensure they have a great and successful time working at Sport Clips. “We have a great culture at Sport Clips,” she said. “It’s fun and easy-going. We all work hard, and it’s essential we do our best with our clients, but it’s a great place to work. I especially like the fact that we stay busy. From the time we open in the morning until we close, we have a steady stream of customers and clients. So, our stylists remain active throughout their shifts, which is good because we’re not making money if we’re not busy. In addition, the tips from our appreciative clients are some of the highest in the business.” She also points out that there are opportunities for advancement within the Sport Clips region and potentially even at the corporate level. “I never thought I would be a manager of a store,” said Sorenson. “But when I was in Twin Falls, I had the opportunity to start working as an assistant manager. Then we decided to move to Utah, where I was able to just transfer from that store to this one, where I then became a manager. Today, it’s just really cool to help and train people right out of hair-cutting school all the way up to becoming a manager. That’s what happened with one of our other store managers. I just receive a lot of satisfaction helping people become successful.” Sorenson’s Sport Clips store in American Fork is one of 50 in the Utah and Idaho region. “It’s really cool that we can choose among so many different stores to work at depending on where we live. If our situations change, we also have the flexibility to transfer to other stores within our region – actually, throughout the country – if they have openings. “One of the things I love about being a manager is helping stylists learn and grow. People, when they come here, love our values and positive environment. Then, when everyone is successful, everything runs well in the store.” Slightly serious, Sorenson said her main goal, for now, is to make sure her Sport Clips store is across the board, the best one. “I still cut a lot of hair, which I enjoy, but I also enjoy all of the other responsibilities as well, like working with all the numbers, watching net sales, etc. It’s challenging, but I enjoy it.” Sorenson and the other Sport Clips stores in Utah and Idaho are feeling the pinch of difficulty in finding personable, talented, and professional hairstylists, just as most industries are finding it difficult to find workers. Sorenson believes the shortage of workers partly stems from the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic when most everything shut down in early 2020. “I think one of the key issues is that during the COVID shutdown, people just started seeing they could make money from home, and they could have flexible schedules,” she said. “But what I really think caused the shortage of workers is the fact that a lot of people, including hairstylists, just decided to either stop working, switch careers, or just move out of the area. But, on the other hand, I think many people also just decided to stay home and spend time raising their families. So, I don’t think it’s just one thing, but COVID certainly has had an effect.” When asked why people should consider Sport Clips for a career, Sorenson is quick to respond. “We are certainly competing for great hair stylists with all the other hair places, but when it comes right down to it, and I’m not just saying this, there are few places other than Sport Clips where you can start a new job or career as a hairstylist that pays well from the moment you start, has the best tips in the business, provides new and advanced on-going training, is always busy, provides upward mobility opportunities, treats people very well, is a fun place to work, and frankly has the best people to work with.” Finally, Sorenson runs back to a back room, grabs her gear, returns, and sets up her work area for a day of hair cutting. On the way, she checks in with two other stylists with questions. She made sure another was receiving her direct deposit payroll properly. She then makes a point about BYU football, “since you first asked me about BYU, they lost to Boise State. Fumbles for sure, but Boise was on fire, and BYU had a bad game. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season pans out.” (BYU has since lost to Baylor and is now at 5-3 for the season.) AMERICAN FORK, Utah, Sept. 22, 2021 – Sport Clips Utah and Idaho today announced that Area Director Duke Sorensen, was recognized as the Area Developer of the Year by Sport Clips at their National Huddle convention in San Antonio.
“This is a great honor that goes out not only to me, but to the managers, coaches, team leaders, and stylists of our Sport Clips stores throughout Utah and Idaho who make our area so successful,” said Sorensen. “We have the best people working in our stores and we need more. With the unemployment rate so low in Utah, along with growing populations, it is getting harder to find great stylists, but for those who love what they do and want to work for a great organization, they should come check out some of our 50 stores.” Sport Clips CEO Edward Logan agrees with Sorensen, “Stylists are the past, present, and future of Sport Clips. They're the heart and soul of our brand because they create the championship haircut experience our clients love. We are committed to having the best possible culture and work environment across any industry. You'll see innovative training, new support programs, and additional opportunities for our stylists as we continue to grow the number of locations, expand the services we offer, and enhance technology to elevate our experience for clients who trust us as the pros in men’s hair." Sorensen received the award for his work in franchise sales in the Utah and Idaho region, developing store locations, training franchisees, opening stores, and for training support for all the stores. There are 50 Sport Clips stores in the area with three more planned for next year. About Sport Clips Utah and Idaho Sport Clips is one of the most successful haircut companies in North America. In Utah and Idaho, where populations are growing at a fast clip, and unemployment is at the lowest levels ever seen, the question remains, is there a demand for hair stylists?
The quick answer is yes, and the demand is increasing. Utah saw the highest employment growth rate in the hair industry during the past 10-year period, with 28% growth. With the ongoing complexities of COVID-19, migration of people from one state to another, work life balance changes and expectations, Sport Clips and other hair styling stores are feeling the pinch. The demand for stylists is high, but competitive. Most stylists, whether right out of school, returning to the workforce, or changing locations, will find jobs. The market is competitive because of the growing need resulting from growing populations. Utah is the fourth fastest growing state in the U.S. with a 20% growth rate from 2000 to 2010. During the same period, Idaho also had a population growth rate of 20%. In Utah, the total annual openings for hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists are only 240 according to the Utah Economic Data Viewer. A similar situation exists in Idaho as well. However, the need based on the number of openings available in many of the hair styling stores is much greater. In fact, there is a shortage of hair stylists. We have a need for stylists in every one of our stores throughout Utah and Idaho. The population growth throughout our region, and the competitiveness for great stylists among all the industry players, is creating this very real shortage. It’s never been a better time for stylists in our industry and region. To make things more complex, unemployment rates are at the lowest points ever in Western states. At the current rates of unemployment, most everyone who can and wants to work is working. In Utah unemployment is at 2.6%, and in Idaho 3%. The national unemployment rate is 5.4%. Low unemployment rates and fast population growth, requiring more shops, make for an increased and strong demand for stylists. And this applies not only to women. Men will continue returning to the industry in the coming years. Now, just 12% of stylists are men. That will increase in the next five years as more men seek hair services with a preference for male providers. There are a lot of dynamics in play regarding careers for stylists. But for those looking to work in this exciting, creative, and essential industry, the current situation and future look dazzling. At our Sport Clips stores, we are always looking for talented stylists to join our ranks where they can go to work immediately, receive ongoing and up-to-date training, and find excellent opportunities for advancement.
